The workshop "Materiality, Layout and Formulas: Discovering Patterns in Written Artifacts from Egypt" will take place at Heidelberg University on 10–12 March 2022, organized by TP A03 (Materialität und Präsenz magischer Zeichen zwischen Antike und Mittelalter), TP A09 (Schreiben auf Ostraka im inneren und äußeren Mittelmeerraum) and TP B15 (Visuelle Gliederungsmittel ägyptischer Texte auf Papyrus). Its goal is to examine small-format, mobile written artifacts belonging to the fields of magic, religion, administration, and daily life in Ancient Egypt (in particular papyri, ostraca, lead tablets and gems) from the perspective of various disciplines, as well as to discuss the relationship between text and writing supports.

The workshop will be divided into three sections, which will focus on different types of texts:

• Magical texts: layout, practices, and formulas
• Literary and religious texts: layout elements
• Administrative/documentary texts: layout and formulas
