  • In the early 1430s an anonymous scribe produced a curious blend of fact and fiction on English history: on six pieces of parchment, put together in the form of a roll that is nearly 5 meters long, he condensed the essence of British and English history in a genealogy leading from Noah to King Henry VI. The text of this so-called ‚Maude Roll‘, acquired by the Canterbury College (Christchurch, NZ) in 1918, is available in an edition. Many questions concerning its material form - the use of the parchment, aspects of the illumination etc. - remain, however, to be answered.
